The days when gardening meant a sore back and aching muscles are long gone. Nowadays, everyone is using tillers – these extremely useful machines are simple, trouble-free, quiet, and efficient. Today’s market offers a variety of different types of tillers, with the electric ones being the most popular.
While not as powerful as gas-powered models, electric tillers don’t weigh as much and are far less noisy. In addition, they’re much more efficient when it comes to energy consumption – running one never costs as much as running a petrol model. Finally, electric tillers are cheaper, more portable, easier to store, don’t require a lot of maintenance, and are much more environmentally-friendly.
Not surprisingly, there are hundreds of different brands and models of these convenient tools on today’s market. Therefore, choosing the right electric tiller for your needs can be a daunting task, particularly if you’re not that familiar with these machines.
Have no worries, though – we’re here to help you out. In the next part of the article, you’ll find our short but informative reviews of the market’s 15 most popular electric tillers. Together with our handy buying guide, these should help you choose a suitable model that will help you take care of the soil in your garden.

Sporting a genuinely unusual design, the New Power Glide is a fantastic option for those who only want to take care of their flower beds and do a bit of weeding.
At only 13.45 pounds, the New Power Glide tiller is a truly lightweight option. Its minimalistic construction makes it very user-friendly and easy to use. It doesn’t get much simpler than this – you just start the model up and till the soil in your garden.
This tiller is equipped with 4 tines (24 blades in total) that spin at the maximum speed of 330rpm. However, its power level is far from that of the other electric tillers on our list. It’s a great choice for cultivating soil in a small garden, but not so much for anything else.
Other features worth mentioning are the built-in storage, single-speed transmission, as well as slip clutch. In summary, New Power Glide is an ideal choice for the less-demanding gardeners – get it if you only want to till the soil around your flowers.

When it comes to manufacturers of home improvement hardware, Black & Decker is undoubtedly among the more renowned brands. Is their LGC120AM cordless electric tiller as good as their other power tools?
As it weighs only 11.73 pounds, this electric tiller is a fantastic option for those looking for a genuinely lightweight machine. Using a 20V Li-Ion battery as the power source, Black & Decker LGC120AM certainly isn’t as potent as some of the other models on our list, but it does its job pretty well. If your garden is really small and you just need a light tiller to work on your flower beds, buying anything bigger than this would be overkill.
With its battery fully charged, this cordless garden tiller can cover an area of approximately 325 sq. ft. in size. A feature we particularly liked is the presence of counter-oscillating tines – you won’t have to worry about weeds getting tangled in the unit’s tines. There’s also a telescoping tube, an adjustable handle, as well as a 2-year warranty.

When it comes to quality outdoor power tools, Snapper is certainly among the household names. Here, we’ll be taking a closer look at Snapper XD, a well-made cordless garden tiller.
The first thing to notice about this model is the overall construction quality. This is a rugged, durable tiller – its build quality is almost the same as that of the best gas tillers. The unit’s metal gear drive transmission is sealed and well-protected from dirt and other debris.
As a cordless tiller, Snapper XD is powered by a Briggs & Stratton battery that is either 2.0, 4.0, or 5.0ah strong. With the least powerful of these batteries (2.0ah) fully charged, Snapper XD can work for about half an hour. Obviously, the runtime increases if you choose to go with a stronger Li-Ion battery.
Snapper XD is equipped with 4 heavy-duty tines, two of which can be removed to decrease the working width from 10” to 5.25”. It also has an ergonomic front handle and is incredibly easy to start (push-button starting) and operate.

Established all the way back in 1937, Troy-Bilt is undoubtedly among the world’s best-known manufacturers of outdoor power tools. Their TB154E model is a great example of how the company’s engineers know how to make an efficient and durable electric tiller.
An ideal choice for a small to mid-sized garden, Troy-Bilt TB154E is equipped with a 6.5-amp motor that powers its 4 forward-rotating tines. The tines are well-made and effortlessly dig, turn, and tear compacted soil, although the model should never be used on exceptionally hard clay. The maximum working depth stands at 5” and the width at 9” (but can go as low as 6”).
Other things we liked about this garden tiller are the durable transport wheels, heavy-duty gearbox, the push-button starting system, as well as the 2-year warranty. As far as we’re concerned, the only major flaw of this tiller is its weight – at 32 pounds, it’s much bulkier than we expected.
Overall, Troy-Bilt TB154E is an efficient tiller that can make quick work of the soil in your small or mid-sized garden.

Greenworks is undoubtedly among the world’s most well-known manufacturers of electric tillers. Their 27012 model is a fantastic option for anyone looking for an efficient, well-made, and foldable tiller cultivator.
Power-wise, Greenworks 27012 is a pretty potent piece of gardening equipment, with an efficient 8-amp engine at its heart. Of course, the performance of this model can’t be compared to that of the gas tillers, but it still does a great job of thoroughly tilling the soil. And, as a corded tiller, it is much more fuel-efficient than most gas-powered garden cultivators.
There are 4 forward-rotating tines on Greenworks 27012, each of them 8 inches long. As expected, both the tilling depth (up to 4”) and width (up to 10”) can be adjusted. At almost 40 pounds, this tiller is pretty heavy, but this can come in very handy when you’re working on compacted soil.

An upgraded version of Tacklife’s Classic model, Tacklife Advanced is one of the best electric tillers in today’s market. Let’s take a closer look at its features:
The 13.5 amp electric engine of this tiller turns its tines at an impressive speed of 380rpm. The tines themselves are made out of manganese steel and provide excellent performance. There are six tines in total, but you can easily switch to 4 (without having to use any garden tools) and, in that way, decrease the working width from 18” to 12.5”.
The model’s working depth, on the other hand, reaches up to 8 inches. This turns Tacklife Advanced into a great choice for all those who need an efficient tiller cultivator to loosen the soil and prepare it for planting. To avoid bouncing on harder surfaces, the manufacturer recommends dragging the tiller backward.
As expected, Tacklife Advanced is equipped with a number of other convenient features, too. These include the double safety system that prevents accidental starts, an ergonomic & collapsible handlebar, 2-position adjustable wheels, as well as the extension cord clamp.

Established all the way back in 1895, Earthwise is among America’s most famous manufacturers of essential gardening tools. Here we have their TC70016 tiller, one of the most potent electric cultivators on our list.
Performance-wise, Earthwise TC70016 is a genuinely powerful electric tiller. Just like the previous two tillers, this model has a 13.5 amp engine at its heart. The motor powers the unit’s 6 durable tines, and these have a maximum tilling depth of 8”. With this tiller, you’ll have no trouble with preparing the soil in your garden for planting.
Other features worth mentioning are the 16” tilling width, a pair of 6” pneumatic wheels, as well as the ergonomically-shaped handles with a soft grip. These features make using Earthwise TC70016 easy and comfortable, which is something you’ll certainly appreciate when working on hard-packed soil.
Besides the fact that this is a corded tiller, and, as such, requires close proximity to a power source, Earthwise TC70016 doesn’t have any major flaws. It’s the market’s best electric tiller and a model that will provide enough power for all of your tilling needs.

Electric Tillers Buying Guide
There are several important factors you need to keep in mind when shopping for an electric tiller. Here are the most important ones:
Size of Your Garden
By their very nature, these types of tillers are designed for use in small and medium-sized gardens. That’s precisely why the first thing you need to consider is whether an electric cultivator is the right choice for your property.
Keep in mind that these are not heavy-duty machines. If you need something to till acres upon acres of land, your best option is to get a gas-powered or rear-tine model. If your garden is smaller than 1,500 square feet, however, you won’t make a mistake by going for an electric tiller.

Rotation Speed (RPM)
The RPM (Rotations Per Minute) of a particular tiller will inform you how potent that model is. It’s the thing that determines the tiller’s ability to tear, turn, and dig the soil.
In general, most electric tillers will run anywhere from 150 to 400rpm. Obviously, gas tillers are even more powerful and run at even greater speeds. However, if you own a small to mid-sized garden, you don’t really need a serious earth-mover – a simple electric tiller, whose tines spin at around 300rpm, will be more than enough.
Working Depth & Width
Another important factor you’ll have to consider is how deep a particular model can dig and how wide it is.
The smallest models typically sport a working width of around 8”. This is pretty much useless when it comes to larger plots, but it’s ideal for flower beds and vegetable patches. If you have a bigger garden, make sure to get a wider tiller. Keep in mind that wider models also have more tines, which, in turn, makes them more efficient.
When it comes to working depth, on the other hand, make sure to get a model whose tines can dig at least 10” deep if you’re planning to create and prepare beds for veggies and flowers. In case the soil in your ground is exceptionally tough or has never been cultivated before, you’ll have to get a model with a greater working depth.

Corded or Cordless?
Just like other gardening power tools, electric tillers can be either cordless or corded.
Obviously, the best thing about corded models is that they can’t run out of juice. Their biggest disadvantage, on the other hand, is the range. If you have a sizable garden but still want to get a corded electric tiller, make sure to get a long extension cable, too.
Cordless or battery-powered models give users much more freedom when it comes to movement, but they also run out of juice after some time. If you’re planning to get one, purchasing it together with a backup battery is your best option.
Conclusion
All of the electric tillers we’ve reviewed above are good in their own ways. However, one model managed to stand out as the best electric tiller money can get today – [amazon link=”B06Y2DMBF4″ title=”Earthwise TC70016″ /].
